Your liver plays an important role in many bodily functions such as producing protein, blood clotting, and metabolism. It is essential for digesting food and filtering harmful substances out of the body. Liver disease can be inherited from parents, but it can also result from liver damage, viruses, alcohol use, and obesity.
Blood tests help doctors assess your risk factors for liver conditions and many others. Any result outside the reference range may indicate the need for further evaluation. A liver blood test checks the levels of enzymes and proteins produced by the liver: ALT (alanine transaminase), which helps convert protein into energy; AST (aspartate transaminase), which helps metabolize amino acids; albumin and total protein, needed to fight infection; and GGT (gamma-glutamyltransferase), which plays an important role in helping the liver metabolize drugs and other toxins. Abnormal levels of these enzymes and proteins indicate possible liver damage or disease. Our dry biochemistry test is highly sensitive and is used successfully worldwide.
